Story Behind the Journey
A journey of happiness and soulfulness was started in the year of 2009. We, the initiators of UNIVERSAL SMILE started our initiative by distributing goodies pack including food packets, books, chocolates, sports accessories, blanket, mosquito-nets to the needy children living by the streets of Kolkata.
It was just then that we planned to start a small children home with children who really needed basic food, clothes and are eager to learn. But the task was not so easy like we planned. We visited various places for convincing their parents or known people. Few of them had single parent. It was easier to get permission from their mothers rather from their fathers. But somehow they were convinced for the better future of their children. We arranged a small rented house with separate accommodation for girls and boys and basic amenities. Initially we brought 6 such children into our folds mainly from the streets near Ballygunge Phari.
Our Children care unit got established 23rd July 2013 at a small rented place in Picnic Garden. In he initial days the children were given training on behavior and discipline.
Within a few days we started training on curricular activities. There were facilities like television, indoor & outdoor games and also extra curricular activities like drawing, singing, dancing. From January 2014 their school journey started in S.D. Academy High School. They were admitted according to their merit.
Apart from the scheduled activities we encourage the children to take part in various competition, talent shows etc. We also observe days of national importance. Occasionally we organize educational & recreational tours.
In the gradual years they excelled in academics as well as other activities and continued to grow further.
This is our small story. Its been almost 7 years now and our work has been recognized and appreciated by many.
We strongly believe that ‘If there is a will, there is a way’.
These children if given proper attention may secure responsible positions in the society in future. We are thriving more to give out our best efforts. We are still continuing our services and would like to expand and reach out to more & more needy children thus seeking proper support & opportunities.
