Who we are
Story behind the journey
A journey of happiness and soulfulness was started in the year of 2009. We, the initiators of UNIVERSAL SMILE started our initiative by distributing goodies pack including food packets, books, chocolates, sports accessories, blanket, mosquito-nets to the needy children living by the streets of Kolkata. But the beneficiaries could hardly get benefitted out of those as the things were snatched from them to fetch money which later on was put to bad use.
It was just then that we planned to start a small children home with children who really needed basic food, clothes and are eager to learn. But the task was not so easy like we planned. We visited various places for convincing their parents or known people. Few of them had single parent. It was easier to get permission from their mothers rather than their fathers. But somehow they were convinced for the better future of their children. We arranged a small rented house with separate accommodation for girls and boys and basic amenities. Initially we brought into our folds 6 such children mainly from the streets near Ballygunge Phari. We were fortunate to get the support of few like minded people through our journey who have made it smoother.
Now we are nurturing 34 children and they are studying in S.D.Academy School (English Medium) till class X and they are admitted to different reputed schools for their higher studies. All the children are continuing learning Painting, Dancing, Music, Song, Cricket, Karate and other things. Some of them are doing excellent in academics and other fields too. Some of them represent us well in various external competitions and tournaments. Some children have shown extra ordinary talents in various fields thus we are thriving to give them the best possible guidance in the particular field so that he/she can continue with that in the future. We have also started vocational training classes.
This is our small story. Its been almost 11 years now and our work has been recognized and appreciated by many. We strongly believe that ‘If there is a will, there is a way’. These children if given proper attention may secure responsible positions in the society in future. We are thriving more to give out our best efforts. We are still continuing our services and would like to expand and reach out to more & more needy children thus seeking proper support & opportunities.
